Grade Level: 4-8
Duration: 50-60 minutes
Objective: To enhance teamwork, passing accuracy, and defensive strategies through a “Sweep Your Room” floor hockey game, preceded by a focused passing practice session to reinforce passing cues.
Contents
Materials:
- Floor hockey sticks for each student
- A large supply of floor hockey pucks or balls
- Cones to divide the gym into two equal halves
- Pinnies to differentiate teams
- Whistles or signal devices
Warm-Up (10 minutes):
- Dynamic Stretches: Guide students through dynamic stretches that target the arms, legs, and core. Include exercises such as arm circles, leg swings, and torso twists to prepare for physical activity.
Activity 1: Passing Practice with Cues (15 minutes):
- Setup: Pair students and give each pair a puck or ball and two hockey sticks. Spread pairs across one half of the gym to ensure ample space for passing.
- Instructions: Review key passing cues with the class, such as “eyes up,” “stick on the ground,” “follow through towards your target,” and “communicate with your partner.” Have pairs practice passing the puck back and forth, focusing on accuracy and control.
- Feedback: Circulate among the pairs, offering tips and corrections to improve their passing techniques based on the cues discussed.
Transition Activity (5 minutes):
- Group Discussion: Gather students to discuss the importance of accurate passing in hockey. Briefly explain how these skills will be crucial in the upcoming “Sweep Your Room” game.

- Setup: Use cones to divide the gym into two equal sides. Distribute an equal number of pucks on each side of the gym. Organize students into two teams, each occupying one side of the gym.
- Game Play: On your signal, teams attempt to “sweep” all the pucks onto the opposing team’s side using their hockey sticks. Set a time limit for each round (e.g., 2 minutes). The team with the fewest pucks on their side at the end of the round wins.
- Rules: Players cannot hold or throw pucks; they must use their sticks to move them. If a puck crosses back over the centerline, it must be played from its new position.
- Variations for Inclusivity: Adapt the size of the playing area or use lighter pucks for students needing accommodations. Consider allowing some students to use their hands if they are unable to use the sticks effectively.
Cool Down (5-10 minutes):
- Reflection and Stretching: Lead a discussion on the strategies that worked well during the game and areas for improvement. Follow up with a cool-down session, focusing on stretching the muscles most used during the lesson.
Assessment:
- Observe students’ passing accuracy during the lead-up activity, focusing on their application of the passing cues.
- Assess teamwork and strategy application during the “Sweep Your Room” game, noting how well students communicate and collaborate.
- Provide individual and team feedback, highlighting effective strategies and suggesting areas for skill development.
This lesson plan combines skill-building activities with a competitive game, emphasizing the importance of accurate passing, strategic thinking, and teamwork in floor hockey.
