Grade Level: 3-8
Duration: 45-60 minutes
Objective: To improve floor hockey dribbling skills, spatial awareness, and team cooperation through a “4 Corners” game and a lead-up relay race dribbling activity.
Contents
Materials:
- Floor hockey sticks for each student
- Floor hockey pucks or balls
- Colored cones to mark dribbling paths and corners
- Pinnies in four different colors
- Whistle or signal device
Warm-Up (10 minutes):
- Dynamic Stretches: Briefly lead the class through dynamic stretches focusing on legs, arms, and torso to prepare for physical activity.
Activity 1: Relay Race Dribbling Through Cones (15 minutes):
- Setup: Create a series of dribbling paths using cones, with enough space for two students to dribble side by side.
- Instructions: Divide the class into teams of equal numbers. Each team lines up at the start of their designated dribbling path. On your signal, the first student in each line dribbles a puck or ball through the cones to a specified endpoint and back, then hands off the stick to the next student in line. The relay continues until all team members have completed the dribble.
- Focus Points: Encourage students to control the puck closely and navigate the cones with agility. Emphasize the importance of quick, controlled movements.
Transition Activity (5 minutes):
- Reflection: After the relay, discuss what skills were used and how they might apply to a game situation. Briefly introduce the concept of the “4 Corners” game, highlighting the importance of dribbling skills and spatial awareness.
Main Activity: “4 Corners” Game (20 minutes):

- Setup: Divide the gym into four quarters, each marked with a large cone of a different color. Assign each student a pinnie matching one of the cone colors.
- Game Play: On your signal, students dribble their puck or ball within their assigned quarter, attempting to maintain control while navigating around others. After a few minutes, signal students to rotate to the next quarter, challenging them to adapt to a new space with different peers.
- Variations for Inclusivity: Adjust the size of the quarters or use softer pucks for students who may need accommodations. Allow students who may not be able to dribble with a stick to use their hands to guide the ball.
- Objective: The goal is to maintain control of the puck in various spaces and under different conditions, enhancing dribbling skills and spatial awareness.
Cool Down (5-10 minutes):
- Group Reflection: Gather students to discuss what they learned from the “4 Corners” game and how the skills developed during the relay race contributed to their performance.
- Stretching: Lead the class through a series of gentle stretches, focusing on the muscles used during the lesson.
Assessment:
- Observe students’ ability to control the puck, their agility in navigating through cones and corners, and their cooperation and communication during team activities.
- Provide feedback that highlights strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring each student understands how to enhance their floor hockey skills.
This lesson plan combines skill-building activities with a fun, competitive game to engage students in physical education while developing essential floor hockey skills.
