I recently had the opportunity to meet Dr. Bittner at an Adapted Physical Education conference in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. During the event, I discovered her innovative use of the Heart Runner 2.0 app to gamify cycling exercises, which I found to be exceptionally intriguing.
Dr. Bittner’s study, focusing on the use of technology to enhance exercise engagement among autistic youth, offers compelling insights into the benefits of integrating specialized tools in adapted physical education. This research is particularly close to my heart as it aligns with our continuous efforts to make physical activity accessible and enjoyable for all learners.
Study Highlights and Key Findings:
- Increased Engagement: The Heart Runner 2.0 app significantly enhanced participants’ heart rates during exercise, demonstrating its effectiveness in engaging autistic individuals in physical activities.
- Focused Attention: Eye-tracking technology used during the study indicated that participants using the app were more focused and less distracted, highlighting the app’s ability to capture and retain their attention.
- Future Directions: The research team is looking to expand the app’s compatibility to Android devices and exploring its application in other forms of exercise like treadmills and rowing machines.
Implications for Adapted Physical Education:
Dr. Bittner’s work exemplifies the potential of technology to transform adapted physical education by catering to the unique needs of autistic individuals. Tools like Heart Runner 2.0 not only facilitate physical health but also enhance the overall exercise experience, making it more engaging and beneficial.
This study is a testament to the significant strides being made in the field of adapted physical education and the role of innovative technologies in supporting diverse educational needs. By leveraging such advancements, we can continue to improve and adapt physical education practices to meet the needs of all students.
In addition to learning and sharing ideas with Dr. Bittner, we also got the chance to explore the area; riding camels, snowboards, and ATV’s in the desert and heading to the top of the worlds tallest building the Burj Khalifa!

Conclusion:
The Heart Runner 2.0 application is a promising development in the field of adapted physical education, offering a tailored and engaging approach for autistic youth to achieve effective exercise outcomes. It represents a significant step forward in our quest to ensure that physical activity is inclusive and adaptive, enabling every individual to reach their potential.

Thank you for sharing this ground breaking technology with our APE community. The evidence in the presentation demonstrates it will be beneficial for students on my caseload that independently ride a stationary bike.
