At the heart of inclusive physical education lies the belief that every student, regardless of ability, deserves to participate in meaningful and engaging activities. A key tool in achieving this is the STEP process, a practical framework for adapting physical activities. Developed by Black and Stevenson in 1984, STEP provides educators with a simple way to adjust activities using four elements: Space, Task, Equipment, and People.

At JustAdaptIt.com, we’re excited to announce a new project: a chatbot designed to help educators apply the STEP method in real time. Though still in development, this tool promises to make adapting activities easier, more efficient, and more accessible than ever. What is the STEP Process?

The STEP framework is a proven strategy for making physical activities inclusive. By adjusting four key elements, educators can meet diverse needs while maintaining engagement and challenge for all students.

  1. Space: Modifying the physical environment.
    • Example: Reducing the size of a soccer field to help students with limited mobility navigate more easily.
  2. Task: Simplifying or redefining activities.
    • Example: Allowing a student to roll a ball instead of throwing it during a throwing drill.
  3. Equipment: Using adapted or alternative tools.
    • Example: Replacing a standard volleyball with a lighter beach ball or a ball with bells for students with visual impairments.
  4. People: Adjusting roles and interactions.
    • Example: Pairing students with peers for support through a buddy system or assigning roles that suit individual strengths.

By focusing on these elements, educators can create environments where every student has the chance to participate, grow, and succeed.

Introducing Our STEP-Inspired Chatbot

The Just Adapt Bot is designed to simplify the process of adapting physical education activities. Follow these easy steps to get started:

  1. Choose an Activity: The bot will ask you to select a physical education activity, such as basketball, soccer, or volleyball. Simply pick the activity you want to adapt.
  2. Focus on a Skill or Get an Overview: After selecting an activity, the bot will ask if you want to focus on a specific skill (like dribbling or passing) or get a general overview of all skills for that activity. Choose what works best for your needs.
  3. Get STEP Model Adaptations:
    • If you pick a skill focus, the bot will provide detailed adaptations using the STEP model:
      • Space: Adjustments to the environment (e.g., smaller court, clear zones).
      • Task: Modifications to the activity (e.g., simpler rules, slower pace).
      • Equipment: Suggestions for accessible tools (e.g., lightweight balls, tactile aids).
      • People: Strategies for support (e.g., peer buddies, guided practice).
    • If you choose a general overview, the bot will list adaptations for all skills related to the activity.
  4. Search for Additional Resources: At the end of each response, the bot will provide a link to search for more resources on the Just Adapt It website.
  5. Explore More Options: The bot will ask if you’d like to explore another activity or skill focus. Simply answer, and the bot will guide you through the next steps.

Tips for Using the Bot

  • Be clear when selecting an activity or skill focus for the most relevant adaptations.
  • Use the provided search links if you need additional resources.
  • Take your time exploring different activities and skills to get the best ideas for your PE lessons.
