Lesson Plan: Adapted Dance Routine for “YMCA”

Objective: To engage students in an inclusive dance activity, adapting the iconic “YMCA” song for both standing and seated dance options.

Materials:

  • Music system for playing “YMCA” by Village People.
  • Chairs for seated participants.
  • Visual aids depicting each YMCA letter pose.

Introduction (5 minutes):

  1. Welcome students and introduce the song “YMCA” by Village People.
  2. Explain the purpose of offering both standing and seated dance options to ensure inclusivity.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):

  1. Lead a gentle stretching routine, suitable for both standing and seated students.
  2. Encourage movements that warm up the arms and upper body, as they are crucial for the YMCA dance.

Main Activity (20 minutes):

  1. Teach the YMCA dance in sections, focusing on one letter at a time. Demonstrate both standing and seated versions for each letter:
    • Y: Arms stretched up or out.
    • M: Arms bent to form an ‘M’.
    • C: Arms curved to form a ‘C’.
    • A: Arms stretched wide.
  2. Repeat each letter’s movement several times, alternating between standing and seated demonstrations.
  3. After teaching each letter, combine them to form the full YMCA sequence. Practice this slowly at first, then gradually increase to the song’s tempo.
  4. Play “YMCA” and let students practice the dance, choosing either the standing or seated version.

Adapted Version for Special Needs (10 minutes):

  1. For students who need more support, break down the movements into simpler forms.
  2. Use visual aids to help them understand each pose.
  3. Encourage peer support where appropriate.

Cool Down (5 minutes):

  1. Lead a cool-down session with gentle stretches.
  2. Emphasize relaxing the arms and shoulders.

Closure (5 minutes):

  1. Reflect on the session, asking students about their experiences and what they enjoyed.
  2. Highlight the importance of adaptability and inclusiveness in dance.

Assessment:

  • Observe students’ ability to follow along with the dance in either the standing or seated form.
  • Assess their engagement and enthusiasm during the activity.

Extensions:

  • Invite students to create their own dance moves to other parts of the song.
  • Organize a performance for peers or a school event.

This lesson plan emphasizes adaptability and inclusivity, ensuring that all students can participate and enjoy the dance regardless of their physical abilities.
