Welcome to the second episode of the Sensory Circuit series! This gymnastics-inspired circuit is packed with activities that focus on rolling, flipping, and balancing, targeting your child’s proprioceptive and vestibular systems. These activities promote body awareness, coordination, and strength, all while keeping kids engaged in exciting, movement-filled challenges. With just a few items like mats, beams, and rings, you can create a fun-filled sensory circuit right at home.
1. Balance Beam Challenge
What to Do: Set up a balance beam (or a taped line on the floor for beginners). Have your child walk across it while adding sensory challenges, such as:
- Carrying a small weighted object like a beanbag or medicine ball.
- Stepping over or dodging obstacles, like a swinging punchbag.
- Walking backward or on tiptoes for an added challenge.
Why It Works: Walking on a balance beam strengthens the proprioceptive system by activating muscles and joints for stabilization, while the challenges stimulate the vestibular system, improving dynamic balance and spatial awareness. These added tasks also enhance motor planning and concentration.
2. T-Shirt Tuck Roll
What to Do: Have the child tuck their legs into their T-shirt before attempting a forward roll. This keeps their body compact and helps them focus on staying tight during the roll. For extra fun, create a theme (e.g., rolling like a ball or pretending to be a “hidden ninja”).
Why It Works: The tucked position provides deep proprioceptive input by compressing the body and engaging core muscles. Rolling activates the vestibular system, improving head and body control as they move through space.
3. Gym Ring Tricks
What to Do: Set up gymnastics rings for various challenges, including:
- Performing front and back flips while holding a ball between their legs for extra core engagement.
- Dangling upside down from their knees or legs for vestibular stimulation.
- Swinging side-to-side or spinning slowly while holding a pose.
- Practicing controlled movements like transitioning from hanging to sitting on the rings.
Why It Works: Gym rings are versatile tools for combining vestibular stimulation (through flipping and swinging) with proprioceptive input from gripping and holding positions. Adding objects or different movements increases difficulty, encouraging body awareness and strength.
4. Headstand Wedge
What to Do: Position a wedge mat against the wall and guide your child into a headstand. They can use the incline of the wedge to support their head and shoulders, while their legs rest lightly on the wall. Gradually, they can work toward lifting their legs off the wall for full balance.
Why It Works: The headstand strengthens proprioceptive feedback by engaging the core, shoulders, and arms while supporting body weight. It also provides vestibular input by placing the child in an inverted position, improving spatial orientation and balance.
5. Sushi Rolls
What to Do: Wrap a wedge mat in a yoga mat or blanket to create a smooth, padded surface. Have your child practice rolling down in different ways, such as:
- Log Rolls: Keep the body straight while rolling sideways.
- Pencil Rolls: Extend arms overhead and point toes for a streamlined roll.
- Egg Rolls: Hug knees tightly to the chest while rolling.
Why It Works: Rolling engages the vestibular system through rotational movement while activating core muscles for proprioceptive input. Using different roll styles enhances body awareness and motor planning, while the tactile experience of the blanket adds extra sensory input.
These gymnastics-inspired activities offer a playful way to strengthen your child’s sensory systems while promoting confidence and creativity. Introducing the Sensory Circuit Series
The Sensory Circuit series is designed to engage children in fun, dynamic activities that stimulate their sensory systems, with a primary focus on the proprioceptive and vestibular systems. These systems are essential for helping children develop strength, coordination, and body awareness, laying a foundation for both physical and cognitive growth.
Inspired by seeing Mike Webb present on these systems in Sharjah, UAE, in March 2024, I realized how vital this knowledge is for every PE teacher. The proprioceptive and vestibular systems play such a crucial role in our profession, and understanding how to incorporate activities that target these systems can elevate our ability to support children’s development. This episode focuses on simple, engaging activities you can easily set up at home to help kids build body awareness and confidence.
What Is the Proprioceptive System?
The proprioceptive system helps children understand where their bodies are in space by providing feedback through muscles, joints, and movement. Activities that involve pushing, pulling, lifting, or carrying stimulate this system, enhancing strength, coordination, and motor planning. For example, tasks like carrying a weighted basket or crawling through resistance help children feel more in control of their movements while improving their overall stability.
What Is the Vestibular System?
The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, is responsible for balance, spatial orientation, and coordination. It is activated through movements such as spinning, jumping, and balancing. Activities that challenge the vestibular system, like walking on a balance beam or rolling down a hill, help children improve their sense of equilibrium and ability to process dynamic motion.

While this series focuses on proprioceptive and vestibular development, sensory integration involves many systems working together. Future episodes may delve into:
