Lesson Plan: Understanding Sportsmanship
Grade Level: 4-10
Subject: Physical Education
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Objective: Students will understand the concept of sportsmanship, its importance in sports and everyday life, and how to demonstrate good sportsmanship in various situations.
Materials Needed:
- Video: “Sportsmanship – The Who, What, Why, and How”
- Projector or Smart Board for video
- Handouts of the “Sportsmanship This or That Workout”
- Online Quiz (prepared in advance)
- Materials for a simple team game (e.g., dodgeball, relay race)
- Worksheets for note-taking during the video
Lesson Outline:
- Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin the class with a brief discussion on what students know about sportsmanship. Ask them to share instances where they observed good or bad sportsmanship.
- Introduce the objective of today’s lesson and inform them about the video they will watch.
- Video Viewing (5 minutes)
- Show the “Sportsmanship – The Who, What, Why, and How” video. Encourage students to take notes on the key points, especially the five main qualities that contribute to sportsmanlike behavior.
- Discussion (10 minutes)
- Lead a discussion on the video. Focus on the questions:
- Who is expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship?
- What is sportsmanship?
- Why is good sportsmanship important?
- How can we be good sports?
- Discuss the five main qualities of sportsmanship mentioned in the video.
- Lead a discussion on the video. Focus on the questions:
- Activity: Sportsmanship This or That Workout (10 minutes)
Facilitate the workout, encouraging students to think about the choices they make.
- Team Game (10 minutes)
- Organize a simple team game that encourages teamwork and good sportsmanship. Before starting, remind students of the importance of respecting each other, playing fair, and being gracious, whether they win or lose.
- Observe and note instances of good sportsmanship during the game.
- Reflection and Quiz (5 minutes)
- After the game, have a quick reflection session. Ask students to share how they felt about the sportsmanship displayed during the game.
- Introduce the online quiz or the paper-based quiz to test their knowledge on sportsmanship. Mention that this quiz is not just about right or wrong answers but understanding and internalizing the concept of sportsmanship.
- Conclusion (Optional)
- Encourage students to visit the recommended website for more health and fitness videos.
- Assign the online quiz as homework if not completed in class.
Adaptations for Special Needs Students:
- Use visual aids and handouts with larger fonts for students with visual impairments.
