Welcome to ‘The Just Adapt It Files’! In this episode, we dive deep into the crucial, yet often complex, relationship between Adapted Physical Education (APE) teachers and parents of children with disabilities. Our discussion, drawing insights from recent research, explores APE teachers’ perceptions and experiences in fostering these vital partnerships.
We’ll unpack the importance and benefits of parent involvement in APE, highlighting how teachers view parents as invaluable collaborators who “know their child better than anyone” and can provide unique perspectives on their child’s physical activity (PA). This involvement can significantly contribute to a child’s PA progress, both in and out of school, supporting lifelong PA development.
However, the journey isn’t without its perceived barriers and disconnects. APE teachers often experience challenges such as feeling marginalized and encountering situations where parents may deprioritize APE compared to other academic subjects or services. We also address how the itinerant nature of many APE roles, involving travel to multiple schools and larger caseloads, can limit the time available for developing ongoing collaborative relationships with parents. A significant challenge identified is parents’ initial lack of understanding or misconceptions about what APE truly entails, with some perceiving it as “structured recess” or simply “playing and having fun” rather than a critical academic service focused on motor skill development.
Despite these hurdles, APE teachers demonstrate remarkable care, respect, and persistence in reaching out to parents. Key facilitators for developing relationships include constant and open communication and actively educating parents about the value and scope of APE. We discuss innovative strategies such as visual communication, which includes inviting parents to observe APE classes, planning school events or adapted sports programs, and sharing videos or pictures of students’ progress through texts, emails, or applications like Seesaw. These methods help parents “see APE in action,” better understand their child’s learning, and gain insight into how they can support PA at home.
Ultimately, this podcast emphasizes the mutual goal of children’s PA success, advocating for APE teachers to be proactive in developing relationships and for parents to actively value and prioritize APE. Join us to learn how dedicated APE teachers navigate these dynamics, build resilience, and strive to bridge the gap for truly collaborative and effective adapted physical education.
